Project Description

The Kurilpa Bridge was opened in October 2009 and the last Level 1 Routine Visual Inspection was undertaken in 2018. According to the Annual Inspection Program for the bridge a 10-year Level 3 Detailed Condition Inspection was due.

The inspection was split into two distinct areas above bridge and below bridge. Works above bridge were directed to the super structure and involved the partial closure of the Riverside Expressway to allow for the high-level rope access and boom lift works to be completed.  All works were undertaken overnight to minimise the impact on traffic flows during the busy peak periods. Below bridge works were accessed by boat with a drone operator working from the boat and dive teams entering the water to survey piers, cathodic protection and marine foundations.

Project Benefit

The key benefit provided on this project is to identify any issues requiring maintenance or rectification and brings the bridge in line with the maintenance inspections required under the TMR guidelines and operation and maintenance schedules.  Completion of the inspections resulted in the formulation of a report showing works that were required to be actioned and the formulation of a long term inspection routine specific to the Kurilpa Bridge.
